RESUMEN

PURPOSE: We evaluated (1) whether participating in middle- and long-distance running races augments muscle soreness, oxygen cost, respiration, and exercise exertion during subsequent running, and (2) if post-race menthol application alleviates these responses in long-distance runners. METHODS: Eleven long-distance runners completed a 1500-m race on day 1 and a 3000-m race on day 2. On day 3 (post-race day), either a 4% menthol solution (Post-race menthol) or a placebo solution (Post-race placebo) serving as a vehicle control, was applied to their lower leg skin, and their perceptual and physiological responses were evaluated. The identical assessment with the placebo solution was also conducted without race participation (No-race placebo). RESULTS: The integrated muscle soreness index increased in the Post-race placebo compared to the No-race placebo (P < 0.001), but this response was absent in the Post-race menthol (P = 0.058). Oxygen uptake during treadmill running tended to be higher (4.3%) in the Post-race placebo vs. No-race placebo (P = 0.074). Oxygen uptake was 5.4% lower in the Post-race menthol compared to the Post-race placebo (P = 0.018). Minute ventilation during treadmill running was 6.7-7.6% higher in the Post-race placebo compared to No-race placebo, whereas it was 6.6-9.0% lower in the Post-race menthol vs. Post-race placebo (all P ≤ 0.001). The rate of perceived exertion was 7.0% lower in the Post-race menthol vs. Post-race placebo (P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Middle- and long-distance races can subsequently elevate muscle soreness and induce respiratory and metabolic stress, but post-race menthol application to the lower legs can mitigate these responses and reduce exercise exertion in long-distance runners.

The study aimed to evaluate the Couples' Closeness-Distance Scale (CCDS), an observational assessment reflecting couples' relational dynamics; based on joint-drawing, it offers measurable dimensions. Forty cohabiting Israeli couples participated in the joint-drawing task and answered self-report questionnaires for attachment, differentiation of self, and relationship satisfaction. The paintings were assessed by trained observers on the CCDS scales (too distant, too close, autonomy, engagement) for both the women's and men's experiences. A two-level-dyadic model showed that differentiation and relationship satisfaction predicted the CCDS and revealed a "pursue-withdraw cycle": Women sensed the men as too distant, while men sensed the women as too close. Participants' sense of discomfort from their partners' distance related to less autonomy and engagement during the painting, with a greater effect on the women. The pilot implies that the CCDS enables observing dyadic-systemic aspects of couple dynamics and may enrich clinical evaluation.

This study aims to classify motorcycle (MC) following distance based on trajectory traffic data and identify the risks associated with MC following distances to prevent rear-end collisions. A total of 8,223 events of a MC following a vehicle were investigated in Pathum Thani, Thailand, and 41 cases of MC rear-end crashes were analyzed between 2017 and 2021. Time headway (TH), safe stopping distance (SSD) and time to collision (TTC) were applied to the proposed concept to determine safe following distance (SFD). Speed and following distance for actual rear-end crashes were applied to validate SFD. Results showed that the proposed SFD model identified the causes of MC rear-end collision events as mostly due to longitudinal critical area (38 cases, 92.68%), implying insufficient MC rider reaction and decision time for evasive action. The longitudinal warning area had relatively few chances for rear-end collisions to occur, with only 3 cases recorded. VDO clip extracts from MC rear-end crashes illustrated 11 cases (26.83%) of rider fatality. The study findings revealed that the SFD concept can help to prevent MC rear-end collision events by developing reminder systems when the rider reached the following distances of both warning and critical areas.

Analyzing the important nodes of complex systems by complex network theory can effectively solve the scientific bottlenecks in various aspects of these systems, and how to excavate important nodes has become a hot topic in complex network research. This paper proposes an algorithm for excavating important nodes based on the heat conduction model (HCM), which measures the importance of nodes by their output capacity. The number and importance of a node's neighbors are first used to determine its own capacity, its output capacity is then calculated based on the HCM while considering the network density, distance between nodes, and degree density of other nodes. The importance of the node is finally measured by the magnitude of the output capacity. The similarity experiments of node importance, sorting and comparison experiments of important nodes, and capability experiments of multi-node infection are conducted in nine real networks using the Susceptible-Infected-Removed model as the evaluation criteria. Further, capability experiments of multi-node infection are conducted using the Independent cascade model. The effectiveness of the HCM is demonstrated through a comparison with eight other algorithms for excavating important nodes.

The COVID-19 pandemic's consequences have led to a global change in educational settings towards online learning. The utilization of virtual learning (VL) has increased significantly. This study aimed to extract the success factors of VL and also examine the relationships among them. The research method involves examining factors identified in the literature review and seeking confirmation from experts using the Content Validity Index (CVI) method. Ten success factors are extracted and confirmed, including Technological, Management, Learning Capability, Pedagogical, Ethical, Resource Support, Interface Design, Evaluation, Institutional, and Study Environment. Based on the Interpretive Structural Model (ISM) method and the fuzzy matrix of cross-impact multiplications applied to classification (MICMAC), which divides the factors into five levels, the relationship between these factors is examined. Level I emphasizes the importance of evaluation mechanisms. Level II stresses integrating pedagogical, ethical, resource support, and institutional aspects. Level III highlights the alignment of learner capabilities with platform interfaces. Level IV underscores the significance of the learning environment. Lastly, Level V emphasizes the interplay between technology and management in VL's expansion. The findings of this study can be developed and customized through collaboration among instructors, learners, and institutions. Moreover, the findings from correlating success factors can be applied in practical learning experiments or utilized to develop efficient modeling manuals.

This paper analyzes the behavior of the well-known Spearman's footrule distance (F-distance) to measure the distance between two rankings over the same set of objects. We show that F-distance is not invariant to labeling, and therefore, it suffers from a serious drawback for its use in applications. To circumvent this problem, we propose a new distance between rankings which is invariant under indexing (i.e., labeling) and appears as a good alternative to the direct use of F-distance between rankings, and also the invariant-under-indexing Kemeny's distance as well. We also show how our new distance can work with importance weights. Some simple examples are given to show the interest of our method with respect to the classical one based on F-distance and Kemeny's distance.

Old age is a time of emotional, social and physiological challenges. The role of the family remains essential in coping with these challenges. This is particularly true of non-cohabiting children, who in 2020 accounted for just under half of all those helping elderly people with loss of autonomy and/or pathologies. Following on from sociological research on close caregivers, this article first looks at the level and influence of children's relationships and assistance towards their elderly parents, and then proposes the construction of a territorial indicator - in this case, a score - to measure the spatial proximity and potential availability of children. Subject to further development, this indicator represents a first milestone in the territorial understanding of children's relationships with and help for their elderly parents.

The size and regulation of personal space are reportedly atypical in autistic individuals. As personal space regulates social interaction, its developmental change is essential for understanding the nature of social difficulties that autistic individuals face. Adolescence is an important developmental period in which social relationships become complex. We conducted a three-year longitudinal study of interpersonal distances in autistic and typically developing (TD) individuals aged 12-18 years at Time 1 and 15-21 years at Time 2. Their preferred interpersonal distances were measured when an experimenter approached the participants with and without eye contact. The interpersonal distances of autistic individuals were shorter than those of TD individuals at both Time 1 and Time 2. Furthermore, the interpersonal distances of autistic individuals at Time 1 and Time 2 were highly correlated, but no such correlation was found in TD individuals. The results suggest that the interpersonal distances of autistic individuals are stable and that the shorter preferred interpersonal distances in autistic individuals compared to those of TD individuals are maintained during adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has shown that ~ 50-60% of individuals have impaired proprioception after stroke. Typically, these studies have identified proprioceptive impairments using a narrow range of reference movements. While this has been important for identifying the prevalence of proprioceptive impairments, it is unknown whether these error responses are consistent for a broad range of reference movements. The objective of this study was to characterize proprioceptive accuracy as function of movement speed and distance in stroke. METHODS: Stroke (N = 25) and controls (N = 21) completed a robotic proprioception test that varied movement speed and distance. Participants mirror-matched various reference movement speeds (0.1-0.4 m/s) and distances (7.5-17.5 cm). Spatial and temporal parameters known to quantify proprioception were used to determine group differences in proprioceptive accuracy, and whether patterns of proprioceptive error were consistent across testing conditions within and across groups. RESULTS: Overall, we found that stroke participants had impaired proprioception compared to controls. Proprioceptive errors related to tested reference movement scaled similarly to controls, but some errors showed amplified scaling (e.g., significantly overshooting or undershooting reference speed). Further, interaction effects were present for speed and distance reference combinations at the extremes of the testing distribution. CONCLUSIONS: We found that stroke participants have impaired proprioception and that some proprioceptive errors were dependent on characteristics of the movement (e.g., speed) and that reference movements at the extremes of the testing distribution resulted in significantly larger proprioceptive errors for the stroke group. Understanding how sensory information is utilized across a broad spectrum of movements after stroke may aid design of rehabilitation programs.

Background: COVID-19 pandemic impacts not only the physical health but also the mental health of every individual. Aim and Objectives: To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental and physical health of college students. Method: An online survey was conducted using convenience sampling on 512 participants. The student's mental health was assessed by using DASS 21 analysis and sleep patterns were recorded on the PSQI scale. Result: The overall effect of the pandemic on the mental health of college students was affected to varying degrees. On comparing all variables of DASS analyses, it was found that of the 512 college students, 57.4% were depressed and 51.6% fell into the anxious category. Conclusion: It is concluded that young adults experienced increases in anxiety, stress, and depressive symptoms during this pandemic.

Environmental monitoring, ocean research, and underwater exploration are just a few of the marine applications that require precise underwater target localization. This study goes into the field of underwater target localization using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) enhanced with proximity-based approaches, with a focus on mean estimation error as a performance metric. In complex and dynamic underwater environments, conventional localization systems frequently face challenges such as signal degradation, noise interference, and unstable hydrodynamic conditions. This paper presents a novel approach to employing RNNs to increase the accuracy of underwater target localization by exploiting the temporal dynamics of proximity-informed data. This method uses an RNN architecture to track changes in audio emissions from underwater targets sensed by a microphone network. Using the temporal correlations represented in the data, the RNN learns patterns indicative of target localization quickly and correctly. Furthermore, the addition of proximity-based features increases the model's ability to understand the relative distances between hydrophone nodes and the target, resulting in more accurate localization estimates. To evaluate the suggested methodology, thorough simulations and practical experiments were carried out in a variety of underwater environments. The results show that the RNN-based strategy beats conventional methods and works effectively even in difficult settings. The utility of the proximity-aware RNN model is demonstrated, in particular, by considerable reductions in the mean estimate error (MEE), an important performance measure.

Grafting in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) has mainly been used to prevent damage by soil-borne pathogens and the negative effects of abiotic stresses, although productivity and fruit quality can also be enhanced using high vigor rootstocks. In the context of a low nutrients input agriculture, the grafting of elite cultivars onto rootstocks displaying higher Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) supports a direct strategy for yield maximization. In this study we assessed the use of plants overexpressing the Arabidopsis (AtCDF3) or tomato (SlCDF3) CDF3 genes, previously reported to increase NUE in tomato, as rootstocks to improve yield in the grafted scion under low N inputs. We found that the AtCDF3 gene induced greater production of sugars and amino acids, which allowed for greater biomass and fruit yield under both sufficient and limiting N supplies. Conversely, no positive impact was found with the SlCDF3 gene. Hormone analyses suggest that gibberellins (GA4), auxin and cytokinins (tZ) might be involved in the AtCDF3 responses to N. The differential responses triggered by the two genes could be related, at least in part, to the mobility of the AtCDF3 transcript through the phloem to the shoot. Consistently, a higher expression of the target genes of the transcription factor, such as glutamine synthase 2 (SlGS2) and GA oxidase 3 (SlGA3ox), involved in amino acid and gibberellin biosynthesis, respectively, was observed in the leaves of this graft combination. Altogether, our results provided further insights into the mode of action of CDF3 genes and their biotechnology potential for transgrafting approaches.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of hip external rotation or extension/adduction on minimizing the ischiofemoral distance (IFD) and assess the correlation between cadaveric and fluoroscopic IFD measurements in difference hip positions. METHODS: This cadaveric study involved 33 hip joints from 17 embalmed cadavers. IFD, the distance between the lesser trochanter and lateral ischium, was measured in different hip positions: neutral, external rotation at 30° and external rotation at 60° with the hip in both neutral extension and adduction as well as 10° hip extension and 10° hip adduction. Difference in IFD related to positions and correlation between cadaveric and fluoroscopic measurement were analyzed. RESULTS: IFD measurements showed that the greatest reduction occurred at 60° of external hip rotation, with a significant difference observed only between neutral and 60° external rotation in cadaveric groups (7.60±4.68 vs 5.05±3.48, 95% CI, 0.14 to 4.96; p=0.036). No substantial difference was observed between extension and adduction positions . Positive correlations were observed between cadaveric and fluoroscopic measurements, especially in the neutral position (r=0.492, p=0.004), external rotation at 30° (r=0.52, p=0.002), external rotation at 60° (r=0.419, p=0.015), and the extension/adduction positions combined with neutral rotation (r=0.396, p=0.023). CONCLUSION: The IFD significantly decreased with increasing degrees of hip external rotation, particularly at 60°. No significant reduction was observed in the extension/adduction positions. Additionally, positive correlations were observed between cadaveric and fluoroscopic measurements for specific hip positions: neutral rotation, external rotation at 30° and 60°, and extension/adduction at 10° with neutral rotation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Surgeons can use this knowledge to improve hip impingement assessment through radiography, focusing on positions where IFD reduction is most notable. Understanding the relationship between hip positions and IFD can enhance the diagnosis of ischiofemoral impingement syndrome and benefiting patient care and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT) enables the creation of a three-dimensional (3D) model that represents the ankle morphology in a standing position. Distance mapping (DM) is a complementary feature that uses color coding to represent the relative intraarticular distance and can be used to outline intraarticular defects. Consequently, DM offers a novel approach to delineating osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT), allowing for the quantification of its surface, volume and depth. The reliability of DM for OLT measurements has yet to be thoroughly evaluated. This study primarily aims to determine the reliability of DM in measuring the surface, depth and volume of OLT. A secondary objective is to ascertain whether measurements obtained through DM, when integrated with a predefined treatment algorithm, can facilitate consensus among surgeons regarding the optimal surgical intervention. METHODS: This cohort comprised 36 patients with 40 OLTs evaluated using WBCT and DM. Two raters used DM to determine the lesion boundary (LB) and lesion fundus (LF) and calculate the lesion depth, surface and volume. The raters were asked to choose between bone marrow stimulation, autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis and osteochondral transposition based on the measurement. Inter-rater and intra-rater agreement was measured. RESULTS: Interclass correlation of the lesion's depth surface produced an excellent inter-rater and intra-rater agreement of 0.90-0.94 p < 0.001. Cohen's κ agreement analysis of the preferable preoperative plan produced a κ = 0.834, p < 0.001, indicating a near-perfect agreement. CONCLUSION: WBCT-based 3D modules and DM can be used to measure the lesion's surface, depth and volume with excellent inter-rater and inter-rater agreement; using this measurement and a predetermined treatment algorithm, a near-perfect inter-rater agreement for the preoperative planning was reached. WBCT in conjunction with AI capabilities could help determine the type of surgery needed preoperatively, evaluate the hindfoot alignment and assess if additional surgeries are needed. BACKGROUND: Current studies suggest that for early-stage lung cancers with a component of ground-glass opacity measuring ≤2 cm, sublobar resection is suitable if it ensures adequate margins. However, lobectomy may be necessary for some cases to achieve this. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of size and depth on surgical techniques for wedge resection, segmentectomy, and lobectomy in early-stage lung cancer ≤2 cm, and to determine methods for ensuring a safe resection margin during sublobar resections. METHODS: Clinical data from 385 patients with early-stage lung cancer ≤2 cm, who underwent lung resection in 2022, were subject to a retrospective analysis, covering three types of procedures: wedge resection, segmentectomy and lobectomy. The depth indicator as the OA value, which is the shortest distance from the inner edge of a pulmonary nodule to the opening of the corresponding bronchus, and the AB value, which is the distance from the inner edge of the nodule to the pleura, were measured. For cases undergoing lobectomy and segmentectomy, three-dimensional computed tomography bronchography and angiography (3D-CTBA) was performed to statistically determine the number of subsegments required for segmentectomy. The cutting margin width for wedge resection and segmentectomy was recorded, as well as the specific subsegments and their quantities removed during lung segmentectomy were documented. RESULTS: In wedge resection, segmentectomy, and lobectomy, the sizes of pulmonary nodules were (1.08±0.29) cm, (1.31±0.34) cm and (1.50±0.35) cm, respectively, while the depth of the nodules (OA values) was 6.05 (5.26, 6.85) cm, 4.43 (3.27, 5.43) cm and 3.04 (1.80, 4.18) cm for each procedure, showing a progressive increasing trend (P<0.001). The median resection margin width obtained from segmentectomy was 2.50 (1.50, 3.00) cm, significantly greater than the 1.50 (1.15, 2.00) cm from wedge resection (P<0.001). In wedge resections, cases where AB value >2 cm demonstrated a higher proportion of cases with resection margins less than 2 cm compared to those with margins greater than 2 cm (29.03% vs 12.90%, P=0.019). When utilizing the size of the nodule as the criterion for resection margin, the instances with AB value >2 cm continued to show a higher proportion in the ratio of margin distance to tumor size less than 1 (37.50% vs 17.39%, P=0.009). The median number of subsegments for segmentectomy was three, whereas lobectomy cases requiring segmentectomy involved five subsegments (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The selection of the surgical approach for lung resection is influenced by both the size and depth of pulmonary nodules. This study first confirms that larger portions of lung tissue must be removed for nodules that are deeper and larger to achieve a safe margin. A distance of ≤2 cm from the inner edge of the pulmonary nodule to the nearest pleura may be the ideal indication for performing wedge resection.

The development of distance-based paper analytical devices (dPADs) integrated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to monitor Escherichia coli (E. coli) levels in food samples is presented. The fluidic workflow on the device is controlled using a designed hydrophilic bridge valve. Dopamine serves as a monomer for the formation of the E. coli-selective MIP layer on the dPADs. The detection principle relies on the inhibition of the E. coli toward copper (II) (Cu2+)-triggered oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) on the paper substrate. Quantitative detection is simply determined through visual observation of the residual yellow color of the OPD in the detection zone, which is proportional to E. coli concentration. The sensing exhibits a linear range from 25.0 to 1200.0 CFU mL-1 (R2 = 0.9992) and a detection limit (LOD) of 25.0 CFU mL-1 for E. coli detection. Additionally, the technique is highly selective with no interference even from the molecules that have shown to react with OPD to form oxidized OPD. The developed device demonstrates accuracy and precision for E. coli quantification in food samples with recovery percentages between 98.3 and 104.7% and the highest relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.55%. T-test validation shows no significant difference in E. coli concentration measured between our method and a commercial assay. The proposed dPAD sensor has the potential for selective and affordable E. coli determination  in food samples without requiring sample preparation. Furthermore, this strategy can be extended to monitor other molecules for which MIP can be developed and integrated into paper-microfluidic platform.

With the rapid development of international communication, the number of English courses has shown an explosive growth trend, which has caused a serious problem of information overload, resulting in poor teaching performance of recommended English courses. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a graph convolutional neural network model based on College English course texts, students' major, English foundation and network structure characteristics. First, by analyzing the relevant data of College English courses and combining with graph neural network, an English course recommendation algorithm model based on the College English learning strategy of proximity comparison is proposed. Then, the College English texts are taken as feature input, and multi-layer graph convolutional neural network is used to process the above graph neural network structure. Attention mechanism is introduced to enhance the representation of graph features in College English skills. Finally, multi-layer attention model is used to process the courses that users have learned, and intelligent course recommendation is made by combining the multi-layer attention modeling of College English skills. The experimental data show that the proposed method achieves the best performance compared with the commonly used College English course recommendation method.

Children exhibit preferences for familiar accents early in life. However, they frequently have more difficulty distinguishing between first language (L1) accents than second language (L2) accents in categorization tasks. Few studies have addressed children's perception of accent strength, or the relation between accent strength and objective measures of pronunciation distance. To address these gaps, 6- and 12-year-olds and adults ranked talkers' perceived distance from the local accent (i.e., Midland American English). Rankings were compared with objective distance measures. Acoustic and phonetic distance measures were significant predictors of ladder rankings, but there was no evidence that children and adults significantly differed in their sensitivity to accent strength. Levenshtein Distance, a phonetic distance metric, was the strongest predictor of perceptual rankings for both children and adults. As a percept, accent strength has critical implications for social judgments, which determine real world social outcomes for talkers with non-local accents.

The value of accurate protein structural models closely conforming to the experimental data is indisputable. DREAMweb deploys an improved DREAM algorithm, DREAMv2, that incorporates a tighter bound in the constraint set of the underlying optimization approach. This reduces the artifacts while modeling the protein structure by solving the distance-geometry problem. DREAMv2 follows a bottom-up strategy of building smaller substructures for regions with a larger concentration of experimental bounds and consolidating them before modeling the rest of the protein structure. This improves secondary structure conformance in the final models consistent with experimental data. The proposed method efficiently models regions with sparse coverage of experimental data by reducing the possibility of artifacts compared to DREAM. To balance performance and accuracy, smaller substructures ( ∼ 200 $\sim 200$ atoms) are solved in this regime, allowing faster builds for the other parts under relaxed conditions. DREAMweb is accessible as an internet resource. The improvements in results are showcased through benchmarks on 10 structures. DREAMv2 can be used in tandem with any NMR-based protein structure determination workflow, including an iterative framework where the NMR assignment for the NOESY spectra is incomplete or ambiguous. Temporal changes in environmental conditions may play a major role in the year-to-year variation in fitness consequences of behaviours. Identifying environmental drivers of such variation is crucial to understand the evolutionary trajectories of behaviours in natural contexts. However, our understanding of how environmental variation influences behaviours in the wild remains limited. Using data collected over 14 breeding seasons from a collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) population, we examined the effect of environmental variation on the relationship between survival and risk-taking behaviour, a highly variable behavioural trait with great evolutionary and ecological significance. Specifically, using annual recapture probability as a proxy of survival, we evaluated the specific effect of predation pressure, food availability and mean temperature on the relationship between annual recapture probability and risk-taking behaviour (measured as flight initiation distance, FID). We found a negative trend, as the relationship between annual recapture probability and FID decreased over the study years, and changed from positive to negative. Specifically, in the early years of the study, risk-avoiding individuals exhibited a higher annual recapture probability, whereas in the later years, risk-avoiders had a lower annual recapture probability. However, we did not find evidence that any of the considered environmental factors mediated the variation in the relationship between survival and risk-taking behaviour.
